CXW Launches Apple's New 20W Charger Solution

For the iPhone 12 20W PD fast charging, Shenzhen Chengxin Micro Technology has launched a high-performance 20W fast charging adapter synchronous rectification integration solution for CX7509C and CX7538B. The peripheral components are simplified and the circuit is simple, helping manufacturers seize the air outlet of the 20W PD adapter. The 20W PD fast charging solution consists of a main PCB board and a protocol board, with a switch power supply section above the main PCB board. The protocol board is responsible for protocol recognition and output control, and the combination of the two circuit boards fully utilizes space, Reducing volume is indeed a cost-effective overall solution with a "small body and large energy".


The layout of the components on the back of the PCB board in this solution is very streamlined, thanks to the use of built-in MOS high integration chips on both the primary and secondary sides. The CX7509C and CX7538B chips are both packaged in SOP-8, with simple peripheral circuits and debugging, and advantages in both device and production costs.


The primary control power supply scheme of this scheme adopts CX7509C, which integrates a PWM controller and 650V NMOS internally, suitable for a 20W scheme in a closed environment.


The CX7509C supports automatic adjustment of working frequency to reduce losses and improve overall conversion efficiency;

The CX7509C startup circuit has been optimized to reduce standby power, while using dithering technology to prevent audio noise. It supports various comprehensive protections, including cycle by cycle overcurrent protection, overvoltage protection, undervoltage protection, overheating protection, and power supply overvoltage protection, which greatly improves reliability;

The CX7509C is widely used, not only in fast charging adapters, but also in other chargers, set-top boxes, hard drive box power supplies, open switch power supplies, or PC standby devices.


Secondary synchronous rectification chip CX7538B. This is a high-performance switching power supply secondary side synchronous rectifier chip that easily meets level 6 energy efficiency in switching power supplies, making it an ideal replacement solution for Schottky.

The CX7538B supports a maximum switching frequency of 150KHz and is equipped with a built-in 11m Ω low conductivity NMOS transistor, which generates much lower heat than Schottky diodes, significantly reducing temperature and improving conversion efficiency.

The CX7538B supports the CCM/QR/DCM mode of a switching power supply, which is very suitable for 3.3-12V fast charging synchronous rectification. It is equipped with a built-in 60V, 11m Ω synchronous rectification tube that can withstand voltage and provide 3A output. Compared to Schottky, it has a maximum efficiency improvement of 6%, a wide working voltage range, and very simple peripheral components. In wide voltage applications, only one capacitor is needed on the periphery.


Compared to the traditional 20W PD fast charging scheme, the 20W PD fast charging scheme developed based on CX7509C and CX7538B has the characteristics of high integration and simplified peripheral circuits Coupled with the CX2919C/CX2919AC (dual port) PD fast charging protocol chip, the development of a highly integrated 20W PD fast charging charger can be completed, which can easily shorten the product development cycle.


This solution adopts a zero peripheral high-performance protocol chip CX2919C (single port)/CX2919AC (dual port):

The CX2919C is applied to a single USB port charging device and is currently the highly integrated protocol IC in the market. The CX2919C integrates a 10m Ω VBUS channel power switch and a 10m Ω current detection resistor. The CX2919C has industrial grade 4KV ESD characteristics, providing excellent reliability for the product.

The CX2919AC is applied to a 1C1A dual port charging device. When the A port is connected to an Apple charging cable but not connected to an Apple phone, the C port still has fast charging. The CX2919AC integrates a 10m Ω VBUS channel power switch and a 10m Ω current detection resistor. The CX2919AC is the perfect choice for charging devices in the 1C1A 20W configuration.

The CX7509C and CX7538B solutions have the advantages of high integration, simplified peripherals, high power density, and high cost-effectiveness. The cost advantage and development cycle advantage brought by their simple circuit can effectively accelerate the adapter's launch cycle, flexibly match the output protocol IC, and meet the market's demand for 20W PD fast charging. The entire DEMO board has a small volume, making it a rare and ultra compact, high-performance 20W PD overall solution favored by power supply manufacturers in the market!


At present, Chengxin Micro High Integrated 20W PD Fast Charge Chip has been supplied in bulk to multiple brands, and the product stability has been recognized by customers and long-term market validation.


It is reported that the Apple 20W PD charger has been optimized in three aspects based on the original 18W PD charger: 1. structural optimization, 2. transformer small optimization, and 3. software has been slightly upgraded to support 20W PD broadcasting and protection, while the hardware circuit has not been changed.


Due to the complexity and high cost of the original 18W PD structure, the total cost of the charger after optimizing the structure has been reduced compared to 18W PD. The complete solution for CXW Apple 20W PD charger, CX7509C+CX7538B+CX2919C/CX2919AC, has been launched
